Eden Health provides numerous services to help those who are near the end of life. This blog provides a Q&A between Life-cycle Celebrant Katie Melville and Sharon Tate Community Liaison about Eden Health, hospice and ritual.
Q&A:
What is Eden Health?
Eden Health is an employee owned company that focuses on meeting our patients where they are at and helping them stay where they are most comfortable. For most of our patients that is in their home. Eden health has 3 service lines that reinforce this distinguished care model.

Who would benefit from your work?
Anyone seeking additional support throughout their healthcare journey. We offer three service lines in the Portland area, designed to meet the unique needs of patients and families at different stages of care. Home Health supports those recovering from illness, injury, or surgery through rehabilitation and skilled care. Palliative Care provides guidance, symptom management, and support for those living with a life-limiting illness. Hospice supports individuals who are no longer pursuing curative treatment and whose priority has shifted to comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
Describe the values and benefits of working with Eden Health.
Eden Health’s motto is “Our Commitment to Caring,” and that commitment is at the heart of everything we do. For our patients and families, it means compassionate, hands-on care from a team that truly takes the time to listen, understand what matters most, and provide support through some of life’s most difficult moments.
Our employee-owned structure strengthens that commitment. Our team members have a shared investment in the care we provide, creating a culture where people support one another and take pride in delivering the highest quality of care possible.
Ultimately, our goal is simple: to make sure every patient and family feels heard, respected, supported, and cared for throughout their journey with Eden Health.
What is important about the services Eden Health provides?
Eden Health is committed to promoting dignity, autonomy, and patient choice. We meet patients where they are—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—and recognize that every individual’s needs and goals are unique. What makes our services especially valuable is our ability to tailor each patient’s care to their individual circumstances, ensuring they receive the support they need in a way that honors their values, preferences, and quality of life.
How does someone choose your business? What things should they keep in mind? Does insurance cover these services?
Hospice and Palliative Care are self-referral programs, meaning anyone can contact Eden Health directly to request an evaluation. A physician’s referral is not required to get started.
When choosing a hospice or palliative care provider, people should consider the level of support offered, the availability and responsiveness of the care team, the organization’s philosophy of care, and whether the services align with the patient’s goals and values.
Hospice is typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans for patients who meet hospice eligibility requirements. Eden Health’s Palliative Care program is provided at no cost to patients, regardless of insurance, with some insurance-specific exceptions for referrals.
When do people seek the services of Eden Health?
People often wait too long to seek support. Patients and families should consider reaching out when someone has been diagnosed with a serious or life-limiting illness, is experiencing increasing symptoms or difficulty managing their condition, or would benefit from help understanding their treatment options and planning for the future.
Palliative Care can be appropriate at any stage of a serious illness and can be provided alongside curative or life-prolonging treatment. Hospice is appropriate when a patient is approaching the end of life and meets hospice eligibility criteria.
How Is hospice different from death doula work?
Hospice and death doula work can complement one another, but they serve different roles. Hospice is a comprehensive medical model of care for people with a terminal illness who meet eligibility requirements. Hospice provides an interdisciplinary team that can include nurses, social workers, aides, chaplains, physicians, and bereavement professionals, with a focus on comfort, symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, and quality of life.
Death doulas provide non-medical support, guidance, and companionship to individuals and families before, during, and sometimes after death. They may help families with planning, education, rituals, emotional support, and creating a meaningful end-of-life experience.
We believe there is room for both approaches, and when appropriate, they can work beautifully together.
How do you support caregivers and family members throughout the end of life process?
We recognize that serious illness affects the entire family—not just the patient. Our team provides education, emotional and practical support, guidance with difficult decisions, symptom-management education, and help navigating the healthcare system.
We also help families understand what to expect as an illness progresses and provide support during transitions and changes in care. Our goal is to help caregivers feel informed, prepared, and supported rather than feeling like they have to navigate the process alone.
Talk to me about grief and how you support those throughout the grief process.
Grief begins long before someone dies. Families may experience anticipatory grief as they adjust to changes in health, independence, relationships, and their hopes for the future. After a death, grief looks different for everyone, and there is no single "right" way to grieve.
Eden Health provides ongoing bereavement support to hospice families, including resources, check-ins, education, and opportunities for connection. Our bereavement services continue for 13 months following a patient's death, because we understand that grief doesn't follow a timeline.
Most importantly, we want people to know that they don't have to grieve alone. Our goal is to provide a safe, compassionate place for people to process their loss and find support as they adjust to life after a death.
What types of services do you provide to your clients?
(The following answer is specific to Eden Health’s Hospice and Palliative Care services.)
Eden Health provides compassionate, patient-centered care focused on helping people living with serious illness and those approaching the end of life. Our goal is to support the whole person—not just their diagnosis—while honoring each patient’s goals, values, choices, and definition of quality of life.
Our Hospice and Palliative Care teams provide expert symptom management, care coordination, goals-of-care conversations, advance care planning, emotional and spiritual support, caregiver education, and practical resources for patients and families. We work closely with patients, families, and other healthcare providers to ensure care is coordinated and reflects what matters most to the individual.
Whether someone is receiving Palliative Care while continuing treatment for a serious illness or Hospice care at the end of life, Eden Health is here to provide guidance, comfort, and support throughout the journey.
What do you think is important about death rituals?
Death rituals give us a way to acknowledge that a life mattered. They can provide meaning, connection, closure, and an opportunity for families and communities to come together.
Rituals also don't have to look a certain way. They can be religious or spiritual, cultural or completely personal. Whether it's gathering around the bedside, playing someone's favorite music, sharing stories, preparing the body, lighting a candle, or simply sitting together in silence, these moments can help families honor the person they love.
We believe families should have the freedom to create an end-of-life experience that reflects the individual's values, culture, beliefs, and wishes.
Anything else you’d like to add?
We believe excellent end-of-life care is about much more than managing symptoms. It is about listening to patients and families, understanding what matters most to them, and helping them make choices that honor their goals, values, and wishes.
We also believe it is never too early to have conversations about serious illness, future care, and what quality of life means to you. Our goal is to make these conversations less frightening and more empowering.
At Eden Health, we don't believe in simply adding days to life. We believe in helping people make the most of the time they have—while supporting the people who love them along the way.
